This sample balance sheet is laid out in a way that is really useful when you're learning about balance sheets. On the left side are the assets, on the right side are the liabilities. You'll notice that the total at the bottom of the assets column is the same as the total at the bottom of the liabilities column. Hence the term Balance Sheet. This is due to the double entry bookkeeping nature of accounting. In recent times, public companies have adopted a vertical layout, which places the Fixed Assets at the top, then Current Assets, Followed by Current Liabilities and Long term liabilites ending up with the Owners Funds section. Often called equity. No matter the layout, the constituents of each of the defined areas - in this example boxed and headed with a bold underlined subtitle - remain the same.
If you're having a bit of trouble conceptualizing the balance sheet layout, you can view it in a new browser window or just click on the balance sheet picture.
